Pip Utton Theatre Company - Playing Maggie

Why have I never heard of Pip Utton before ? His newest one-man show, “Playing Maggie” has been preceeded over the years by portrayals of Shakespeare, Hitler, Einstein, Dickens, Churchill and Francis Bacon, most of which are still in his repertoire. This newest reincarnation took a slightly different twist – firstly in playing an actor playing Thatcher, and then subjecting himself to open questions from the audience that they might wish to ask Maggie. He handled this nerve-wracking experience with verve, aplomb and extreme professionalism, at times firmly putting members of the audience in their place ! A very different evening, and one to be treasured. Pip returns to the Secret garden on 4th September – playing Hitler. We shall attend !

The venue is unique. The garden of what appears to be a recently built house in the backwaters of Streatham. The concerts were started last year by the cellist Chris Grist, and this season includes a diverse series of performers – the Brodsky Quartet, the London Concertante, Jason Rebello, the King’s Singers and many others.

A great night out! The setting is an enchanting surprise. The performance is outstanding, and engaging, offering a different perspective to Margaret Thatcher that some may have arrived with. Pip channels Maggie freakishly well. Highly recommended!
